Project: In Your Dreams

In Your Dreams, 2012
Mechanical book, wood, beeswax, text on paper
Each Dream Book Box, 5" x 8" x 5"; entire installation size variable

In Your Dreams expands on Hutt’s earlier work. She has always enjoyed reading short stories, and in this piece she explores a new mechanism for telling stories: each Dream Book Box contains a story that is continuous, letting the reader enter the story at any point while turning the handle on the side of the box. Each book box incorporates the fragments of dreams and memories — sometimes humorous, other times poignant — into stories which investigate the connections between night dreams and day dreams.

I am walking along the street
when I see a man I know
standing
turning an oval stone over in his hands.
I can feel it in my chest.
He might be the one
who stole my heart.

"I have always made things with my hands. As with many artists, inspiration for me is the rhythmic result of putting ideas and materials together to create my own personal language."
