MY MOTHER’S LEGACY
My Mother's Legacy is a 1,000 line poem burned onto the underside of 1,000 wooden bowls. On each bowl is written a line that reflects advice, a mannerism, or remark mined from Hutt’s memories of her mother, who died from breast cancer when Hutt was 13. As Hutt explained when Susan Stamberg interviewed her on NPR, “I knew if I just wrote a poem, no one would ever see it.”
DAILY DIARY
The Daily Diary project is a series of more than 3,000 daily small-scale sculptural self-portrait figures modeled by Hutt from self-hardening clay, incorporating objects she found during her daily commute on foot from the South End to Boston City Hall.
WALKING IN MY SLEEP
This work represents a return to Hutt’s drawing roots. Each figure is designed with the same feel for space and volume that her drawing is based on, with the interaction of light, wire and shadow lines together forming the whole of the piece.
CONVERSATIONS IN MY SLEEP
Hutt has always chronicled her dreams as her preferred way to translate the confusion of the day-to-day. In Conversations In My Sleep she evokes dreams that linger or repeat through a grouping of bowls holding dream language and images, on wheels that allow them to roll along with you.
IN YOUR DREAMS
Hutt has filled each dream box with a story incorporating fragments of dreams and memories which investigate the connections between night dreams and day dreams. She invites the viewer to activate each piece by turning the handle, entering the tale at any point.
OUR FRIEND
Our Friend is a memorial piece commissioned by a group of students at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education in remembrance of a beloved member of their group. Hutt worked with them to create a poem-based installation piece incorporating their memories of what made their friend special to them.
HOW MY FATHER LEARNED TO COOK
Hutt wrote a series of guest posts for The Perfect Pantry blog exploring connections between food and memory and illustrated by her photographs. Each post is built around a different recipe and chronicles her father learning to cook after the passing of her mother.
